‘So, your next appointment is Thursday,’ Lana said. ‘I’ll see you then.’

Evan waited until he heard the click of the phone hanging up before he entered her office. ‘Mum, can we have a quick chat?’

‘Of course.’ Lana slid a folder into a filing cabinet. ‘What’s up?’ Her eyes searched for contact.

He took the seat opposite her desk. ‘Nothing. It’s just… you know my trip’s getting closer.’ He panned the room without motive, fixing on the fiddle-leaf fig tree in the corner. Its oversized leaves were motionless against the white wall. ‘There’s a few extra bits of equipment I’m going to need. For my camera.’

Lana observed her son’s eyes cautiously. ‘You want me to increase your credit limit again, don’t you?’

Evan took a moment before he spoke. ‘Just a little. This equipment will really make a difference to the photos I take.’

Lana rolled her head back and clasped the back of her neck. ‘Evan, I’ve already given you a considerable amount for your trip. So has your grandmother. Have you even booked your flights yet? Or your accommodation?’

‘I’ll be doing that soon.’

‘With what money? We helped you build up a travel fund that was meant to help you with your flights and accommodation. You told us you were going to get a job and save up for your spending money and any extra equipment you need. What happened to that idea?’

Evan shifted his eyes to the floor. ‘I’ve tried finding a job. There’s nothing in this town.’

‘There are plenty of jobs going. I saw one just yesterday in the new Countdown.’ Lana shut her laptop with a slap.

Evan’s eye roll was obvious.

‘What, you think it’s beneath you?’ Lana was growing visibly frustrated.

‘No, of course not. Bill said I might be able to start working with him and his dad anyway.’

‘On the cars?’

‘Yeah.’

Lana furrowed her eyebrows. ‘Do you think that’s something you would enjoy?’

Evan gave a moody shrug. ‘I dunno. More than sitting on a stupid checkout.’

‘Evan! I didn’t bring you up to be like that.’

‘Like what?’

‘Entitled. Ungrateful.’ She softened her tone slightly and placed her hand on his. ‘Look, Ev. We’re very blessed to have what we have. But you can’t take anything for granted. We still need to work hard. That’s what I did. Even though I had you at a young age, which is the greatest thing to ever happen to me, I still worked hard to get where I am now. I stayed up all hours studying–’

‘Studying your psychology degree, I know. This isn’t the first time you’ve told me.’

Lana’s eyes grew slender. Evan could tell he’d touched a nerve. Pushed too far. ‘What’s got into you? I feel like I don’t know who you are right now.’

‘Forget it. I should never have asked.’ Evan stood up. ‘I’ll speak to Grandma instead.’

Lana took to her feet. ‘No you will not. She’s given you enough, as have I. This is because of those boys you’re hanging around with, isn’t it? They’ve influenced you. Spending all your money, no doubt. You must think I’m stupid.
